Conclusion & Recommendations
The main conclusion of this study is that there needs to be a greater variety of high support accommodation options in NSW. Existing services are doing a good job of meeting consumers' needs for practical assistance, but social and psychological needs require more attention and there have to be more options for those people who don't want to live in a shared environment.
General Recommendations
- Accommodation support services to collaboratively develop an agreement on the definition and key elements of a supported housing model, os it would look in NSW.
- Accommodation support services to review their functional objectives and either clearly identify themselves as providing a treatment setting rather than a 'home' or, consider moving towards a supported housing model of care. The Human Services Standards (developed as part of the Generic Quality Framework Project) and research on consumer preferences could be used as a basis for developing benchmarks for supported housing.
