The Commonwealth Government has committed $1.8bn over five years towards mental health reform. This represents an unprecedented opportunity for the advancement of mental health in Australia however there is a massive under-investment in the mental health sector. Even though mental health is responsible for 13% of the burden of disease is attracts only 7% of the health budget.
In NSW a $946m program over the next five years will commence with $149m in additional funding in the 2006/7 financial year.
Many people in rural communities are facing pressures they find difficult to cope with, and need to speak with someone about their problems. NSW Health has set up a 24 hour 7 day a week mental health support line for farmers and other members of rural communities.
